Lily Gladstone And Greta Gerwig Join Selection Committee For Fund For Women, Trans, And Nonbinary Stories

Lily Gladstone and Greta Gerwig among others have joined the selection committee for the fund for women, trans, and nonbinary stories. Gladstone and Gerwig have been powerful female forces in this year’s awards season. Gladstone was nominated and won several awards for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, and Gerwig made the hit of summer with Barbie. According to The Hollywood Reporter other women joining the committee include,“Chloé Zhao, Emma Corrin, Eva Longoria, Jane Campion, Janicza Bravo and Lilly Wachowski”.

As for the function of the organization, THR stated, “The committee will choose eight filmmakers who will each receive $50,000 and industry mentorship to make a short film, which will be screened this fall. Proof of Concept received more than 1,200 submissions, with 85 percent of applicants identifying as women, 9 percent as men and 2 percent as nonbinary. A total of 8.5 percent of applicants were transgender. According to AI2 research of the 100 highest-grossing movies each year from 2007 to 2023, just 6 percent of directors were women and 2 percent were transgender.”

With only one woman being represented in the Best Director category at this year’s Oscars, it seems that this type of organization is needed to repair the relationship between women and Hollywood. But, as stated above, the fund is not only for women, it will also function to support trans and nonbinary folks who may or may not identify as female. And, in turn, hopefully put more minorities into places of power.

Hannah Mitchell: Hi All! My name is Hannah Mitchell, I just graduated from the University of Missouri-St. Louis with a major in English. I am very excited to start writing for Mxdwn! I have been passionate about film and storytelling from a young age. My favorite movie of all time is Stand by Me. My favorite TV Show is Succession (a bit basic, I know). But I also love British TV and film and some of my favorite shows from across the pond are Crashing and Misfits. I actually met Jonathan Bailey in London which was incredibly exciting. Anyways, I'm ready to write for this site and am optimistic about my future here!
