According to Variety, Lily Collins will portray J.R.R. Tolkien’s wife Edith Bratt in Tolkien. She will act with Nicholas Hoult (Rebel in the Rye). Dome Karukoski (Tom of Finland) will direct, using a script by Stephen Beresford (Pride) and David Gleeson (Cowboys & Angels).
The Fox Searchlight and Chernin Entertainment film centers on the English writer best known for his epic fantasy novels, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien met Edith, his future wife, at the age of sixteen. She was three years his senior. They fell in love, but Tolkien’s guardian forbade him from seeing Edith until Tolkien turned twenty-one, a prohibition which Tolkien obeyed. He proposed to Edith on the eve of his twenty-first birthday. The biopic focuses on his close friendships in a college, which will ultimately enrich his life and his writing.
Tolkien first introduced audiences to The Hobbit eighty years ago. The Lord of The Rings series soon followed, achieving publication between 1937 and 1949. Needless to say, his work garnered pop culture success in printed media, continuing to sell successfully all these years later. The stories also established their presence in cinema as they were turned into award-winning films, most recently by Peter Jackson.
Collins has appeared in several notable productions as of late, two of which are housed at Netflix: Okja and To the Bone, a dramedy film centering around a character living with anorexia. Collins also stars in the Amazon drama series The Last Tycoon.
