Lena Dunham Showcases Children’s Lit in HBO’s ‘It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise’ Trailer

Matt Wolf’s short documentary It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise premiered at Sundance this past January and featured Girls’ Lena Dunham reliving her childhood literary inspirations while spending time with and interviewing Hilary Knight – the illustrator behind Eloise, the little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel.

Within the landscape of children’s literature and its influential figures, the six-year-old Eloise – created by writer Kay Thompson – represents the misfit kid with good intentions. She exists in a world characterized by privilege and propriety and demonstrates that sometimes it’s okay (or even better) to break the rules.

Unsurprisingly, Dunham connected with this character – so much so that she has a tattoo of Eloise on her lower back. After meeting for the first time, she and Knight “totally bonded,” according to the illustrator.

Dunham, through her production banner A Casual Romance (dedicated to producing films that exhibit the female voice in varying times and space), produced the short. It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise will premiere on HBO on March 23. See Dunham live out her childhood fantasies in the preview below.
