Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie doesn’t hit theaters until this weekend, but the positive buzz surrounding the release (we’re certainly excited for it), Warner Bros. has already green lit sequel, according to sources for The Wrap. There’s no word yet on the plot, but the script is being written by Jason Stern, a contributor to animated projects Wreck-It Ralph, The Princess and the Frog, and Bolt. And honestly, given the mashup of universes The LEGO Movie seems to feature, and the countless other worlds based on the popular toy bricks a sequel could explore, we’re not sure we could make much sense of plot rumors even if there were some.
The sequel project is coming out of Warner Bros. purpose-build animated feature consortium, assembled just over a year ago after The LEGO Movie was already in development. In addition to Stern, the consortium features the talents of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Crazy, Stupid Love, I Love You Phillip Morris), Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs films), and Nicholas Stoller (the man behind both recent Muppets movies, plus comedies like Get Him to the Greek and Forgetting Sarah Marshall). The consortium appears to be Warner’s answer to Pixar, Disney Animation Studios, DreamWorks Animation, and Sony Animation. Warner Bros. owns the rights to the dormant Looney Toons, but has not yet announced any projects featuring those characters.
There’s not yet been an official word on when The LEGO Movie‘s sequel might hit theaters, but it would slot in nicely to 2017, following Warners planned 2015 and 2016 releases of Storks and Smallfoot, respectively. The current LEGO Movie, meanwhile, debuts nationwide this Friday against George Clooney’s WWII drama The Monuments Men and teen vampire flick Vampire Academy.
