The first glimpse of Captain America: Civil War arrived Saturday at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. Captain America himself (actor Chris Evans) was on hand to introduce the footage, as was Anthony Mackie (who plays Falcon). Civil War marks the third Captain America and the thirteenth overall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and 2, serve as directors and the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are the credited screenwriters.
Captain America: Civil War finds a place where not all is well with our favorite team of superheroes. Following events featured in this summers’ Avengers: Age of Ultron, politicians come together to form governing body to decide when The Avengers are to be called. Such measures causes a rift in the group- particularly between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark (a returning Robert Downey Jr.). Oscar winner William Hurt (returning to the MCU for the first time since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which starred Oscar nominated actor Edward Norton in the title role) portrays General “Thunderbolt” Ross who, in the leaked footage below, sums up the tension- “The world owes you an unpayable debt — a great many people see you as a hero, but there are some who prefer the word vigilante. People are afraid.”
Basically The Avengers 2.0, Captain America: Civil War features nearly ever member of the MCU. Downey Jr., most crucially, returns as Stark, as does Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Don Cheadle (War Machine) and Paul Bettany (Vision). A few characters exclusive to the Captain America arc return as well including Frank Grillo (Crossbones), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) and Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter).
While Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk) isn’t expected to make an appearance here, Captain America: Civil War will somehow make room for new characters as well. For instance, the film will mark our first look at the new Spider-man, played by The Impossible‘s Tom Holland. Get On Up‘s Chadwick Boseman will also make an appearance as Black Panther– both Holland and Boseman will reprise their roles in films centered around them following Civil War. German actor Daniel Brühl (Rush) is also on board to portray Baron Zemo and Emmy winning actor Martin Freeman (Sherlock) is slated to appear in an as of yet unspecified role.
Captain America: Civil War will hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
