Laura Linney (Mr. Holmes) is the latest star to join Clint Eastwood’s (American Sniper) upcoming drama Sully, according to Deadline. The film follows Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who in 2009 landed US Airways plane in the Hudson River, saving 155 passengers. Linney will play Lorraine Sullenberger, the wife of the famous pilot who will be played by Tom Hanks (Inferno).
Linney is coming off critical acclaim for her role in Mr. Holmes. She continues to be one of the most respected actresses working today, having starred in The Savages (2007), The Squid and the Whale (2005), and The Truman Show (1998). She also hasn’t been afraid to venture into more mainstream fare including Congo (1995), The Nanny Diaries (2007), and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.
Aaron Eckhart (Olympus Has Fallen) joined the project earlier this month, as co-pilot Jeff Skiles. The film is Eastwood’s follow up to the highest-grossing movie of 2014, American Sniper, which was also about an American icon. Given that Sullenberger is less controversial icon than Sniper’s Chris Kyle, it has a shot at reaching an even wider audience. No release date has been announced.
Along with finishing production on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, Linney also recently finished worked on the biopic Genius. The film follows Scribner editor, Max Perkins, who oversaw books from Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, among others.
