‘Lady in the Van’ Has a Release Date

Sony Pictures Classics has announced a release window for the adaptation of the play The Lady in the Van. The movie is set to release in the U.S. this December, just in time for awards season.

The film stars Maggie Smith (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) as transient woman who moves her van into Alan Bennett’s (Alex JenningsThe Queen) driveway. Over the course of her stay, they learn that there’s more to each other than they originally thought.

The movie is based on a play directed by Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys), who also directed the film version. The story is based on playwright Alan Bennett’s relationship with a homeless woman that lived in his driveway for 15 years.

The December release should make The Lady in the Van a sleeper awards contender later this year, similar to how Philomena was a surprise awards contender in 2013. Sony Pictures classics is likely hoping for the same type of results.
