Equals, the dystopian romance (or anti-romance) starring Kristen Stewart (American Ultra) and Nicholas Hoult (Kill Your Friends), has at last been picked up for U.S. distribution by DirecTV and A24, according to Variety.
Written by Nathan Parker (Moon), the film follows Silas (Hoult) and Nia (Stewart), two co-workers living in a futuristic dystopian society in which emotions and romance have been erased from the human condition. When a disaster strikes, the two become “infected” with romantic feelings for each other and must stick together to survive detection. Guy Pearce (The Rover), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), and Bel Powley (Diary of Teenage Girl) also star.
The story also serves as a parable for the end of a long-term relationship, according to the movie’s director Drake Doremus. He is the filmmaker behind the 2011 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner, Like Crazy, which starred Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek Into Darkness). That film also explored the ideas surrounding a deteriorating relationship, a topic that seems to fascinate the director. It will likely be an interesting twist to see this idea approached in a society working directly against the core relationship from the out-start.
Equals premiered at both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals back in September and have now found home at A24 Films. DirecTV brokered the deal that will see A24 release the film in select theaters while they handle the film’s premieres. Other A24 festival pick-ups this year have included The Witch, The End of Tour, Mississippi Grind, and De Palma. The indie distributor has come to be known as supporter of well-received arthouse pics, and Equals will likely be no exception based on its star actors and popular subject matter. Additionally, what will likely be one of their biggest acquisitions this year, Room starring Brie Larson, is now in select theaters.
A release date for Equals has not yet been set.
