Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Franchise Takes An Unexpected Turn With New Documentary

Kevin Costner’s ambitious Western epic Horizon: An American Saga, the first chapter premiered this year, just got a promising update. Costner, known for his role in Yellowstone, is a familiar figure to modern western fans. While these fans remain eager for news about the release of Chapter 2, which was pulled from New Line Cinema’s calendar after the first chapter’s mixed box office performance, Costner’s WME team has now greenlit a new documentary offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Horizon. This currently untitled project will shed light on the intricate process of creating this self-funded Western saga.

While Horizon: Chapter 1 struggled in theaters, it found new life on VOD, where its slow-burn story gained a following among Western film fans. Though imperfect and often criticized for its lengthy character introductions, Chapter 1 resonated with genre fans who appreciated its sprawling narrative of frontier life. But despite its digital success, New Line Cinema remains cautious about releasing Chapter 2 theatrically, hoping fan anticipation will build to support a stronger box office showing than the first film.

Horizon: Chapter 2 is written and directed by Costner and co-writer Jon Baird. It stars Todd Allen from Django Unchained (2012), Arthur Anderson, and Austin Archer from 2024’s Alien Country. This addition to the saga will continue the stories that began in the first chapter, telling a story about settlers in the American West.

As for the documentary, it doesn’t yet have a confirmed streaming platform. However, reports indicate that Max, which currently hosts Horizon: Chapter 1, is aware of the project and may consider picking it up. With no release date or official streaming home, the documentary promises to keep fans engaged as they await more news on Horizon’s journey into the American frontier.
