Ke Huy Quan Tears Up During Emotional Golden Globes Speech

This past Tuesday, Ke Huy Quan won the Golden Globe for best-supporting actor in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

During his acceptance speech, Huy Quan got very emotional while thanking director Steven Spielberg for giving him his first movie role in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. In the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, Quan plays Waymond Wang, who is known as the sweet husband who runs a laundromat alongside his wife Evelyn, played by Michelle Yeoh.

This is Quan’s first acting nomination and Golden Globe Award win, and the second Asian-American actor to win a Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor (the first being Hein Noir for his role in Killing Fields). Quan began his acting career in The Goonies, where he played Data, and in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, where he played Short Round. He was nominated alongside cast members Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis, with director Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, who was also nominated for three awards: Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture.

Variety writes how Quan began his acceptance speech:

“I was raised to never forget where I came from, and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity. I am so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight,” Quan said. “When I started my career as a child actor in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,’ I felt so very lucky to have been chosen. As I grew older, I started to wonder if that was it, if that was just luck. For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer. No matter what I did, I would never surpass what I achieved as a kid. Thankfully, more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that kid, and they gave me an opportunity to try again.”

After acting in the film, Quan has been recognized for his outstanding performance in his role and has already taken home awards from the Gotham Awards, the National Society of Film Critics, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the New York Film Critics Circle.
