The 56th annual Czech Karlovy Vary Film Festival is host to 33 total films, with 27 of those being world premieres. The festival is to be set up in 3 sections in order to sequence the treasure trove of films that the festival is playing host to. The festival is drumming up buzz with a special screening of the film Juno Zero, a film that explores true stories surrounding the execution of Holocaust architect Adolf Eichmann. The story is set in Israel and is told through three characters and was directed by Jake Paltrow (Young Ones, De Palma). The film was shot on location in Israel and Ukraine, lending the film authenticity.
The festival’s program was revealed by artistic director Karel Och, who also revealed that the festival is set to run from July 1-9 and is set to feature the Crystal Globe competition, a Special Screenings section, and a new competition called Proxima; featuring young filmmakers and auteur-driven movies that defy categorization and traditional categorizations of genre. Och also had this to say:
“From the 1,500 films that have been submitted this year, we have chosen 33 brand new works of cinema that offer the accurate reflection of our taste… A taste derived from a belief in a meaningful edginess and the championing of new means of cinematic expression that nonetheless do not stand in opposition to the audience’s receptiveness and inclinations.”
