Ninety-three million dollars is no small amount. Any other movie would beg for that huge of an opening weekend. But Justice League is no ordinary film, and its current $93 million opening weekend is well below its biggest rival in Marvel cinematic films, according to Variety. Currently, only six films have surpassed the $100 million mark this year for opening weekend, and half of those films are from Marvel.
The $93 million prediction is well below previous predictions, which placed the gross around $110 million, surpassing Wonder Woman, which garnered around $103 million. Unlike Wonder Woman, Justice League had an extremely expensive budget, with estimates around $300-$350 million dollars, meaning this opening weekend could cost Warner Brothers and DC millions in losses.
Its ratings are definitely not helping with the opening weekend numbers. Many critics and reviewers have been giving the film fairly mediocre reviews, with a current 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 46 on Metacritic. To date, only one DCEU (DC Extended Universe) film has ever received a fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes (Wonder Woman at 92%), possibly spelling big changes for Warner Bros and DC for their next films.
Even with its fairly low opening weekend predictions, Justice League did muster $13 million for Thursday previews, making it the fifth-highest grossing film for Thursday previews, behind all three of Marvel’s film releases and Beauty and the Beast. We hope that the two companies will work hard on fixing the problems with their films and be able to push out another film like Wonder Woman.
