‘Jungle Cruise’ has Dismal Opening Weekend in China Box Office

Disney’s Jungle Cruise opened last weekend in China after several months of delays to a mere $3.3 million. The Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt led family adventure film is stated to have cost over $200 million to make. The film has made, in total from both domestic and international box offices, $215 million.

Jungle Cruise follows Emily Blunt’s character, Dr. Lily Houghton, who with the help of Dwayne Johnson’s Frank Wolff journey to find an ancient tree that has healing powers in the Amazon.

Jungle Cruise opened in theaters in the US July 30 and comparatively made over $30 million in its opening weekend. However, the film was still met with mixed reviews garnering two and a half stars out of five on RogerEbert.com and critic score of 62% on Rotten Tomatoes

Ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks throughout the country can be attributed to low attendance in the theaters because the film received majority positive reviews from Chinese film critics. Jungle Cruise scored 8.9 on Maoyan and 6.1 on Douban, similar to MGM’s James Bond installment No Time to Die, which earned $28 million during its China debut.

The film is available to watch on Disney+ or rent on various streaming platforms such as Youtube, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and more.
