Wonder, a film starring Oscar winner Julia Roberts, has had its release date pushed from April 7th to November 17th. Representatives at Lionsgate claim that this is in order to give the film more commercially viable debut. You see, the weeks around Thanksgiving are generally the most lucrative periods for movie theaters. This is in part thanks to basic theater etiquette granting us the ability simultaneously “spend time” with our extended family while effectively silencing them for two hours. Not to mention the film’s family oriented subject matter factored in with the familial vibes of the season are also sure to make this movie a massive hit. Variety was the first to report this story.
The film is based on R.J. Palacio’s book of the same name. It’s about a young boy with a congenital facial deformity, and the support his mother (Roberts) gives him during his struggle to be accepted by classmates at a new school. Room’s Jacob Tremblay will be playing the lead boy. Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) has taken the reigns on his second big-budget feature as director with this one, while veteran writer Steve Conrad penned the screenplay.
