In the days after Joss Whedon’s departure from Batgirl, many different possibilities loom about the project’s future directors, leading sources to state that DC might be looking for female director for the film. Whedon was purportedly very much in charge of the project and Warner Brothers is now challenged to breathe new life into the film.
Whedon’s previous successes with Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, however do not seem to be indicators of Batgirl’s success. In fact, in statement, he said that things never really came together, explaining his decision by saying “Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I… uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?”
An article by Variety surmises that Whedon’s departure could have been because not only was the script deviating from the original series, but also Warner Brothers’ aims to bring more female directors into the fold. Variety also makes sure to note that Whedon’s exit of the film was a “mutual” decision, both on his part and that of the company. Now, we can only wait and see as to whether or not a woman will direct Batgirl!
