Universal Pictures has postponed the official theatrical release for the Jordan Peele-penned remake of 1992’s supernatural horror film Candyman to September 25, 2o20. The remake was initially slated for release on June 12 but, amidst movie theaters across the nation shutting down due to the coronavirus pandemic, the studio had opted for pushing back the anticipated picture. The film now takes the slot of Will Packer-produced Praise This, a musical romance feature about youth choir competitions that was originally slated to release on September 25 this year but is now undated.
Candyman is directed by Nia DaCosta and produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and BRON Creative. The film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Us) as the troubled protagonist, alongside Teyonah Parris (If Beale Street Could Talk), Colman Domingo (Fear The Walking Dead) and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits). This Candyman is the re-imagining of the 1990s slasher franchise about a murderous soul (played by Tony Todd) with a hook for a hand. Legend has it that the killer can be summoned to reality when people say his name five times in the mirror.
Because of the outbreak, Candyman has joined other upcoming Hollywood movies that have now been delayed, including the horror movie sequel A Quiet Place 2, which has been pushed back to September as well. Universal has also delayed the release dates of other movies like Minions: The Rise of Gru and Sing 2, all initially to be released in the upcoming summertime alongside Candyman.
