Lately, many of legendary director John Carpenter‘s films have been getting the sequel/reboot treatment. Just this month new Halloween movie came out that serves as a direct sequel to Carpenter’s original Halloween slasher film from 1978. Not only that, but recently discussion surrounding a possible Big Trouble in Little China reboot starring Dwayne Johnson has surfaced. Now it seems that Carpenter’s 1988 horror classic They Live might also be getting a follow up film.
In an interview with Den of Geek, Carpenter was asked how a film like They Live would be made in the modern world. Carpenter hinted that a project related to the original film “might be closer to reality than you think.” Carpenter remained vague on the subject, though he did mention that some time ago a canceled remake or sequel called Resistance had been written by Matt Reeves, the director of Cloverfield and some of the Planet of the Apes remakes. However, as of right now it seems that nothing has come of that project.
Carpenter has not always held confidence in the remakes and sequels inspired by his movies, and considering They Live‘s status as a cult classic with a large impact on popular culture, it would be difficult to follow up in a satisfying manner. Hopefully this project will find its way into the hands of someone who is competent and understands the significance of They Live.
