Jodie Foster Joins Netflix’s ‘Nyad’, a Marathon Swimmer Diana Nyad Biopic

Jodie Foster is set to star alongside Annette Bening in Netflix’s Nyad, a biopic on marathon swimmer Diana Nyad, per The Hollywood Reporter. The film is helmed by directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin of Free Solo fame, the Oscar-winning documentary. This will be their narrative film debut.

Diana Nyad is a long-distance swimmer who, at the age of 64 in 2013, was the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida, a whopping 110 miles, without the help of a shark cage. Nyad accomplished the feat on her fifth attempt where, for 53 hours, she journeyed across the open ocean-facing sharks and poisonous jellyfish.

Nyad will be portrayed by Bening with Foster playing her coach and friend, Bonnie Stoll.

Produced by Andrew Lazar and Teddy Schwarzman, the project was brought by Mad Chance to Black Bear Pictures, who developed it and packaged it. It was also shopped at the European Film Market in March 2020. The film is based on and inspired by Nyad’s autobiography Find a Way and is written by Ann Biderman and Julia Cox.

The film is still in the early stages of production but should start filming sometime this year.
