Jessie Usher Joins ‘Independence Day 2’

The lead actor from the Starz series Survivor’s Remorse, Jessie Usher, has been cast by Twentieth Century Fox in Independence Day 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He will play the son of Captain Steven Hiller, who was played by Will Smith in the original 1996 film. Michael B. Jordan (the upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four) was originally rumored for the role.

Usher will join Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Jeff Goldblum (The Grand Budapest Hotel), and Bill Pullman (The Equalizer) in the film. Usher’s biggest film role to date was in last year’s surprise hit, When the Game Stands Tall. The original Independence Day (1996) was blockbuster that propelled Smith to stardom. Usher is likely hoping the sequel will give him the same career boost. Will Smith hasn’t been confirmed for the new movie and earlier this year we reported that it will be unlikely that Smith returns to the franchise.

No plot details have been released at this time. The movie was originally set to be released July 4, 2016 but was moved up to June 24.
