Jesse Eisenberg Explores the Glitz of Old Hollywood in first ‘Café Society’ Trailer

Set to open next month’s Cannes Film Festival, audiences have been treated to the first trailer for Woody Allen‘s Café Society.

The first footage focuses on Jesse Eisenberg (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice) as James, young man new to 1930s Hollywood who is hoping to break into the film industry. We also see Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) as a high-powered movie exec, Kristen Stewart (American Ultra) as his ingenue assistant (and the object of James’ affection), as well as Blake Lively (Age of Adaline) and Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect) as glamorous members of this “cafe society”. Also making an appearance is Elaine May, who Allen aficionados will remember as the hilariously dim May in his 2000 comedy Small Time Crooks.

Eisenberg looks to be a perfect compliment to Allen’s neurotic comedic style while Stewart charms as his new leading woman – based on the short glimpses we do get of her. The trailer teases a style and tone much similar to his critically acclaimed period pieces of the past like Purple Rose of Cairo or Midnight in Paris. Hopefully this next venture will deliver just as well.

After its festival premiere, Café Society is set to hit theaters on August 12. Check out the trailer below.
