The writer and director of The Babadook, Jennifer Kent, has recently received financing for an upcoming thriller titled The Nightingale. Financing came from Bron Creative and Made Up Stories. Kent will once again both write and direct on this project.
Aisling Franciosi from BBC’s The Fall will star alongside Sam Claflin of The Hunger Games. Franciosi will be playing a young Irish convict who, after witnessing the murder of her child and husband, seeks out retribution with the help of an Aboriginal tracker. The film is meant to take place in Tasmania during 1825.
Also on the roster are Damon Herriman (Justified), Ewen Leslie (The Daughter), and Harry Greenwood (Hacksaw Ridge). A few unfamiliar faces have also been cast: a dancer named Baykali Ganambarr, Magnolia Maymuru, who is a model, and an unknown Aboriginal who goes by the name of Djuki Mala.
This will be Producer Bruna Papandrea’s first production for Made Up Stories since having separated from Pacific Standard; production company that she and Reese Witherspoon once ran together. Papandrea was behind the mega-hits Gone Girl and Wild, so the potential for success while teamed up with Kent is promising. A release date has yet to be set, but it looks like we should see it in theaters sometime in 2017.
