Jaume Balaguero to Make Third English-Language Feature ‘Muse’

Director Jaume Balaguero, co-creator of the Spanish found-footage horror franchise, [Rec] – the basis of the American found-footage horror franchise, Quarantine,  – is set to direct Muse, a supernatural thriller for Filmax International. Muse will be the third film Balaguero has shot in English. The first, Darkness, was released in 2002, and featured Anna Paquin. The second Fragile, came out in 2005, and starred Calista Flockhart. Darkness was one of Balaguero’s least critically successful films, though it did do well financially. Fragile, received better reviews, but never got a wide release in the U.S. Any combination of these factors could be why Bagaluero waited twelve years to try another foray into the English market.

Here is Muse’s plot according to an exclusive from Variety:

Salomon… has been off work since the tragic death off his girlfriend. Now, anxious to return to some semblance of normality, he goes back to his job as a police officer. But he hasn’t slept for months and has been suffering a recurring nightmare in which a woman is brutally murdered.

Back at work, the nightmare becomes a reality: the same woman who appears every night in his dreams is found dead in exactly the same circumstances. Now, Salomon will do whatever he can to solve this case and to discover the identity of the mystery woman.

Filmax has produced all of Balguero’s feature films. According to Variety, Filmax plans to shop the film around the American Film Market. With any luck, Muse will become the horror director’s second film to get a wide U.S. release.
