Jared Leto May Star in Disney’s ‘TRON 3’

Announced yesterday, Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto will most likely be the lead in the upcoming TRON reboot. There were originally plans to make third installment in 2015, which Leto was also circling, but plans fell apart. This new reboot has yet to hire a writer or director, but has Justin Springer, who produced TRON: Legacy, already on board. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news.

Leto would star as a character named ‘Ares’, and would return to the computer program the Grid, but little has been decided, or at least revealed, about the plot. No word yet whether Garrett Hudland and Olivia Wilde will return.

Leto and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also be involved in some producing capacity if the project moves forward. Seesaw Films will produce, and Film4 and New Regency is financing.

Bruce Boxleitner, the actor who portrays Alan Bradley / Tron, allegedly stated in an 2015 interview that he believed Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and Marvel had deterred their interest in TRON 3, given they now had some of the greatest fantasy/sci-fi properties at their disposal. But it seems now they are reevaluating their decision to shelf the Tron project.

Leto recently starred as The Joker in Suicide Squad, and will next star alongside Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling in Blade Runner 2049. He has also signed on to portray Andy Warhol in new bio-pic Warhol by Terrence Winters, and is in development for his his feature film directorial debut 77.
