James Gunn plans on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3’ to be his last in the series.

Director James Gunn has confirmed his plans to let Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 be his final outing in the series. This announcement came after Marvel’s new featurette, showcasing all of their slated films for the upcoming years. During the featurette, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 was slated for a release in May of 2023.

Following this, Gunn received a tweet asking if there will be anymore films in the series beyond Volume 3. To which Gunn responded, “I’m planning on it being my last.”

Gunn has been an integral part of The Guardians of the Galaxy films, his voice gave the films a district style and tone that sets them apart from other entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is not out of the question for Marvel to continue the series without Gunn. In the past, in series such as Thor, creative voices have changed for each film. Taika Waititi currency is helming the series with 2017’s Thor Ragnarok, and the upcoming Thor Love and Thunder. Similar can be said about the Captain America films.

Little is known about Gunn’s current version of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. The script has been long finished, and filing has yet to begin. Gunn has previously said that there will be at least one major character death in the film, but little else is known.

Gunn will most likely continue with projects outside of the MCU. He is currently in post-production for DC’s upcoming Suicide Squad film, which he wrote and directed. He is also helming spinoff series of the film for HBO Max following John Cena’s character The Peace Maker, which is currently filming.

James Gunn has previously written and directed Slither, Super, and Guardians of the Galaxy Volumes 1 & 2.
