J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) probably has one of the most diverse careers of any actor working today. He’s had an incredible number of iconic roles across television and film, as well having earned an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2014. He still seems to be in full-swing these days, especially with his upcoming appearance as Commissioner Gordon in 2017’s Justice League. The iconic DC Comics character was brought back to glorious life in The Dark Knight trilogy, being played by legendary actor Gary Oldman. Since then, the DC Cinematic Universe has gone through major reimagining, with director Zack Snyder having a major part in its construction.
Despite the poor reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, Justice League has the potential to push the DC Cinematic Universe into success. The epic will bring Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Aquaman together on the big screen, not to mention all of the exciting supporting characters. And since Gordon had an important role in The Dark Knight trilogy, it only would seem logical to continue that practice. And with the talented Simmons playing the part, who knows what new sides we may get to see of Gordon. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Simmons discussed what it was like shooting Justice League, revealing Snyder’s great on-set process.
That was a really fun set. Zack [Snyder] runs sort of a big, happy family and it’s obviously, in many ways, a very different work environment when you’re working on a big, giant movie like that than a relatively small movie like The Meddler. But at the end of the day, the director is the one who sets the tone. And one of the things that Zack and Lorene have in common is they’re just nice, smart, competent, fun people that you don’t mind spending a 12-hour day with.
Snyder always gathers a phenomenal cast and crew for his projects, regardless of their eventual outcomes. And even though the state of the DC Cinematic Universe is in tatters right now, the upcoming installments always have the chance to change things for the better. So, let’s hope someone like Simmons can help make that happen.
