After J.J. Abrams‘ The Force Awakens greeted fans with a spectacular mix of both original and new generations of Star Wars mythology, it was clear that most would not want to wait until 2018 for Epsiode VIII to see more. Luckily we will get the first spinoff of the space opera franchise before then with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The prequel centers around an entirely different set of characters as they join a massive rebellion to steal the plans to the Death Star. Here we get the first glimpse of it in the first trailer released by Lucas Films.
The spinoff is written and directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), and like Abrams’ film, has a heroine in the lead role, played by Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything). She is a devious troublemaker who is recruited to be a part of the team that takes down the Death Star. Even though this is technically coming after Episode VII, it’s taking us back to the era of the original trilogy. It’s refreshing to see that Rogue One will be vastly different from the main episodes, depicting a darker, more enigmatic world than what we have seen in previous installments.
The film also stars Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (Killing Them Softly), and Forest Whitaker (Out of the Furnace). The new trailer also creates a great sense of fear for what Jones’ character is trying to do. The stakes are high, but success is dependent upon her, and we love it. Check out the teaser trailer below.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16th, 2016.
