Irish Animated Feature ‘Wolfwalkers’ Unveils First Trailer and Details

Wolf walk with me.

Just in time to top off St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the first concept trailer for Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon’s new animated film Wolfwalkers broke as a Cartoon Brew exclusive. The feature was first announced at the animation forum Cartoon Movie in Bordeaux, France earlier this month.

From Oscar nominated director Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea) and his team of artists comes what Moore described as the “final panel of our Irish folklore triptych”. The tale follows Robyn Goodfellow, a young hunter’s apprentice, as she and her father arrive in Ireland. Together, they are tasked to wipe out the last of the wolf packs, but Robyn’s life changes after she encounters native “wolf walker” Mebh and is transformed into the very howling beast she and her father were hunting for.

Moore helms the film with co-director Ross Stewart (art director on The Secret of Kells and co-directed a sequence with Moore in the animated anthology feature The Prophet). Alongside Japanese anime studios, the Ireland based animation house is one of the major forces in the world still producing and maintaining the artistry of traditionally hand-drawn animations in an industry where American CGI-titans like Pixar, DreamWorks, and now Disney become global box-office giants.

Austin Allison: Born and raised in Tucson, AZ, I have been obsessed with cartoons, animation, and film in general for as long as I've known how to talk and draw. From Disney animation to indie movies, filmmaking was always the purest form of art to me. I majored in Film and Television Studies and minored in Studio Art at the University of Arizona. The greatest aspect of studying film was developing a creative and critical eye for a medium that I had loved for so long, but couldn't explain why I loved it until now.
