International Distribution Rights For ‘Black Tea’ Have Been Sold

Before the Berlin Film Festival began, Black Tea’s international distribution rights have been picked up for multiple different locations. Black Tea was directed by Abderrahmane Sissako. 

As Variety points out, the film takes place after a young African woman decides to abandon her own wedding and attempt to build a new life in China. Through the course of doing so, she gets a job in a tea shop, only to begin a relationship with the owner. 

Sissako drew inspiration for the story after visiting a restaurant in Guangzhou. The restaurant, “The Perfume Hill,” is owned by a married couple of Chinese and African descent. 

The distribution rights for the film have been sold to Caramel for distribution in Spain, Pandora Films in Germany, Films4you in Portugal, Academy Two in Italy, Cineart for Benelux, Provzglyad for CIS, Falcon for Indonesia, and many more. Variety posted a full list of the distributors. One of the production companies who worked directly on the film, Gaumont, gave the movie praise for the story it tells, and the nature in which it does it. 

Black Tea stars Nina Melo in the leading role, joined by Han Chang, Ke-Xi Wu, Michael Chang, and Pei-Jen Yu, among others.
