Captain America: Civil War has launched Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in stunning fashion, having just recently grossed over $1 billion at the box office, but there’s still plenty left before we get the next huge ensemble film, the two-part Avengers: Infinity War. There’s reportedly going to be a massive lineup of superheroes that will be featured in the films, some obviously being already established characters in the MCU but also many new faces.
The main villain of Infinity War is said to be Thanos (Josh Brolin), who was briefly featured in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, then again in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The team behind Civil War, co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo and the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are taking on the very intimidating task of helming the two films. Since Civil War hit theaters, they have been slowly releasing details about their upcoming projects, although still not much is known about how Infinity War will play out. During an interview with Cinema Blend, McFeely and Markus discussed the challenges of introducing the Thanos in an effective way, especially since he has not been seen much in previous films.
I think the problem will be solved simply because he will be the villain, have lots of scenes, and you’ll understand his point of view. He’ll do lots of dastardly things. I’m not saying he’s not a challenge. He is, because he’s got so much power, but I guess find the, I’m using this in quotes, ‘the human underneath,’ but we’ll have the opportunity because he’ll have a lot of scenes.
It’s good to hear that Thanos will be getting a major role in the two films, although it’s still a mystery as to how he will effect the rest of the characters. Markus explained how there will be a lot of depth to him and will be quite powerful by saying: “Yeah, and like any character, we’re going to learn about the character, not just as a villain. If you’ve got the guy taking you through more or less two movies, he can’t just be twisting his mustache the whole time.”
We have a long way to go before we can get our hands on Infinity War, with many upcoming standalone MCU films to come. With introductions of iconic heroes like Spider-Man and Black Panther in Civil War, it’s all up to the imagination as to how they will change the ever-growing superhero universe.
Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 opens on May 4, 2018, followed by Part 2 on May 3, 2019.
