The long-awaited sequel to the 1996 alien invasion classic Independence Day is one step closer closer to finding its way to the big screen. 20th Century Fox has announced a May production start, with an eye to a June 24, 2016 release date, just in time for the 20th anniversary of the original.The original film’s director Roland Emmerich (the upcoming Stonewall), has reportedly long wanted to helm a follow-up film. There are no reports of him having signed on to direct as of yet, but based on comments by both Emmerich and studio insiders, closing his deal appears to be a formality. Casting won’t begin until Emmerich or another director is signed, but reports have it that Will Smith will not be reprising his role as Captain Steven Hiller, at least as of now. But never say never – the fact that the movie is happening with Emmerich attached might just be the pull to draw him back.
The original script was penned by Emmerich and his frequent collaborator, producer Dean Devlin. The current version is credited to screenwriter Carter Blanchard (Dead Asleep). No plot details have been revealed so far, but we can be pretty sure that aliens, heroes and explosions will be involved.
