Although multiple films were picked up for distribution at the Cannes Film Festival this year, one company made an unusual play and picked up two films to add to its repertoire. Both Fjord and Minotaur were picked up exclusively by Impact Films for distribution.
In the past, Impact Films has been responsible for releasing many films to audiences in India. On top of their expansive library, they’ve helped Indian audiences see some of the most acclaimed films from recent years, even including Best Picture winners such as Parasite and Everything Everywhere All At Once. In their exclusive reporting of the pickup, Variety noted that both Minotaur and Fjord were big hits at Cannes this year. Minotaur, from Russian director Andrey Zvyaginstev, managed to win the runner-up Grand Prix prize this year, while Cannes’ highest award, the highly sought after Palme D’Or, went to Christian Mungiu’s Fjord.
Variety also noted that the head of Impact Films, Ashwani Sharma, said that the deals for both movies had begun before Cannes would officially open its doors for the year. He commented on the quality of both films, and touched upon how he was sure both would land very well with audiences.
It’s a great feeling that they have won and we are proud to be representing them in India and we will plan a decent theatrical release in the coming months.
