According to an exclusive by Variety, the horror film Luz has been bought by Screen Media and will be released in U.S. theaters within the first quarter of 2019.
The film, which first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, follows a young cab driver (Luana Velis) who is being followed by possessed woman (Julia Riedler). Tilman Singer both directed and wrote the script for the film, and he produced alongside Dario Mendez Acosta.
Seth Needle, one of the Screen Media negotiators who helped to acquire the rights of the psychological horror, had this to say about the film:
“Every so often there’s a film that really unnerves, and just flat-out scares us. Luz’ does exactly that. Tilman has made a beautiful but truly terrifying movie that people are going to be talking about for sure.”
Singer said this in response to his film’s success:
“To see this kind of reaction to our film, visit festivals and now release it in North America is a little bit like shooting a movie itself; It’s hard to fully grasp. Producing ‘Luz,’ I had no idea where it would go and I am excited for the life that it will have.”
Needle worked with Conor McAdams to achieve the deal for Screen Media, and they negotiated with Joe Yanick, Hugues Barbier, and Justin Timms with Yellow Veil Pictures.
