The arrival of Comic Con usually brings with it the newest bits of information regarding our favorite franchises, as well as the annual leaked trailer/teaser footage from said franchises. Last year, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice got the privilege to experience footage leak with the debut of their first trailer. This time, another DC property, Suicide Squad had its turn. And while the preview was only intended for audiences at the Hall H in San Diego, the bootlegged footage naturally found its way online soon after.
This prompted Warner Bros. to try and block the footage from being shown online, but to little avail. Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing and international distribution for Warner Bros., even released a statement underlining the studio’s discontent with the bootlegged promotional feature:
Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed. We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation.
The studio, lead by director David Ayer (Fury), decided to get out in front of the leak by posting the footage officially for everybody to see shortly thereafter. And while the footage isn’t by definition, a trailer (it’s described as a Comic-Con First Look), it’s here, and it should keep fans content.
In the first look, we’re shown all the key players in the film, with Viola Davis’ (The Help) Amanda Waller heading task force of villains to save the world, and explaining to some men at dinner her motivations for doing so. From there, we’re given numerous quick shots of some of the most celebrated villains from DC’s rogue gallery including Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Slipknot (Adam Beach). It’s all accompanied by very morose sounding lullaby, but the coup de grâce of the footage comes, of course, near the end, when an evil laugh rings out and we’re given our first glimpse of Oscar winner Jared Leto’s (Dallas Buyers Club) Joker.
Fox also had their own leaks to deal with, as footage from X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool made the bootleg rounds online, but Fox has yet to officially release that footage for the public.
Suicide Squad is set to be released on August 5th of next year.
