Indie distributor Screen Media Films has picked up North American rights to the film Ride, which was written and directed by Helen Hunt. Though no specific date has been set, the plan is for a release in the second quarter of 2015.
The story is about a mother who travels cross-country to California to be with her son after he decides to drop out of college and “find himself” while surfing. Once she arrives, it is she who ends up going on a journey of self-discovery. Hunt will play the mother, while her son will be played by Brenton Thwaites (The Giver, Maleficent). Luke Wilson (Middle Men) and Mike White (HBO’s Enlightened) also star.
This marks Hunt’s sophomore directing effort, after 2007’s low-key Then She Found Me. After performing in the role of leading lady in big-budget studio movies like Twister, Pay It Forward, and What Women Want, Hunt has seemingly turned her focus to directing her own material, while appearing in the occasional indie like 2012’s The Sessions.
