While a majority of European cinemas have a second wave of shutdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Asia’s box office is booming this weekend. Hauro Sotozaki’s Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train is nearing $200M in Japan’s box office after being released on October 16th. Demon Slayer is an anime film based off of the manga Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotōge. The film is direct sequel to the 2019 anime series. Demon Slayer is being shown in over four hundred theaters, and it passed the $100 million milestone just ten days after it was released, which broke a new speed record for the local box office. The film continues to break records, and has remained at number one for twenty five days in a row, and seems to be continuing to do so. The anime is distributed by Toho and Aniplex and according to Deadline, has quickly become the fifth highest grossing film in Japan. The highest grossest film in Japan remains to be Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away with making 30.8B yen.
After being in theaters since October, the numbers have only improved. The theaters that the film is playing at reported that in the third weekend, the film made $1.8 million, which is only a drop of 11%. This means the film broke another record, being the fourth highest-ever weekend box office for Imax theaters in Japan. Also, Demon Slayer’s $8.9 million Imax total is only second to current record-holder, Bryan Singer’s $13.4 million Bohemian Rhapsody. The difference is, Bohemian Rhapsody took almost four months to make this record, while Demon Slayer is second in less than a month.
