In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, director Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) has revealed that he will start shooting the sequel to his 2013 robots vs. monsters blockbuster, Pacific Rim, this fall.
With production close to starting, the movie currently has a planned release date of August 4, 2017. No word has been released whether Charlie Hunnam (Crimson Peak) or Rinko Kikuchi (Kumiko The Treasure Hunter) will return for the sequel, or if the film will include new leads.
While well-regarded by most critics and audiences, the movie failed to make its $190 million budget back through domestic grosses, though it more than made up for that via foreign markets. This is likely due in part to the film drawing heavy influence from Asian culture.
Del Toro’s newest horror film, Crimson Peak, is set to be released just in time for Halloween, this October 16. That movie stars Hunnam, as well as Jessica Chastain (Interstellar), Mia Wasikowska (Madame Bovary), and Tom Hiddleston (I Saw The Light). In the film, an aspiring author (Wasikowska) is haunted by memories of a family tragedy when she moves into the mansion of her new love interest (Hiddleston).
