Grant Gustin, star of the popular CW television series The Flash, will join the ensemble cast of the upcoming indie dramedy Krystal. Directed by Oscar nominated and Emmy winner actor William H. Macy (Fargo), the film marks Gustin’s first big-screen role since premiering the DC Comics adapted series and only his second film appearance to date – he appeared in the little-seen 2014 indie Affluenza. Macy directs from a screenplay by Will Aldis (Stealing Cars).
The quirky title focuses on a young man who becomes smitten with a stripper. His infatuation grows so much that he joins her Alcoholic Anonymous group just so that he can spend time with her. The impressive ensemble cast includes Rosario Dawson (Top Five), Nick Robinson (Jurassic World), John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge!), Felicity Huffman (Cake), Kathy Bates (Tammy) and Macy himself. It’s unclear as to what role Gustin will portray in the project. Macy made his feature directorial debut with the 2014 indie Rudderless starring Billy Crudup (Spotlight) and Huffman (who just happens to be married to Macy). Production is slated to begin next month in Atlanta.
Curiously, while Gustin has earned praise from both fans and critics for his performance on The Flash, portraying the DC Comics mainstay (and alter ego Barry Allen), the actor wasn’t approached to appear on the big screen in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Justice League films. Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), who teased the role in a cameo in the currently in release Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will portray the character in future installments, including a planned 2018 standalone The Flash film. Then again, considering the reviews for Batman v Superman, Gustin may have been spared.
Krystal doesn’t yet have a release date or distribution in place.
