Godzilla Minus One saw its US debut last weekend after seeing success in its home turf of Japan a month prior. With the US release comes considerable success for the newest flick from the nearly 70-year-old franchise.
After ranking third overall during the weekend at the box office, Minus One made history on Monday when it claimed the top spot for the daily totals. It earned $1.23 million on Monday, with Hunger Games taking second and Animal taking third.
ComicBook.com points out it’s been almost 20 years since a non-English live-action film took the top spot at the US box office, with fans and critics praising the new monster flick. Takashi Yamazaki takes up writing, directing, and visual effects for this film, completely rebooting the character and following a post-World War II Japan. The feature boasts a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.5/10 on IMDb.
While Godzilla is stomping up success in the States, Wonka and Migration are beginning their international stints.
Wonka is gearing up for an overseas early opening of approximately $30 million. The Timothée Chalamet-led film is directed by Paul King, who also helmed Paddington. Similarly, Paddington opened in 2016 to a similar amount that Wonka is on track for, with a total of $26.2 million historically.
Migration is starting smaller at just 17 markets against Wonka’s 37 opening markets. As Deadline reports, China dated Migration and Wonka head-to-head at the box office. The new film from Illumination and Universal shares a similar release pattern with Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which saw higher than $480 million in global totals.
