The state of Fox’s upcoming Gambit movie is bit like what Deadpool was like over a year ago: we have no clue what the hell is going on. Originally scheduled for an October 2016 release date, the story of card-slinging Cajun Remy LeBeau (to be played by Channing Tatum) was supposed to serve as a means of expanding the X-Men world beyond the characters we have focused on for so long (i.e. Wolverine, Xavier, Magneto). However, the film has been stuck in development hell for the past two years, not making any real progress due to Executive Producer Simon Kinberg’s desire to refine the movie’s script.
However, an interview with Kinberg by The Hashtag Show at the 2016 Saturn Awards has revealed the EP is hoping for production to start sometime in the Spring of next year. “We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning — or spring — of next year,” Kinberg said regarding the state of Gambit. “There was a moment where we were going to shoot the movie at the beginning of this year, and then we felt it just wasn’t read. So, knowing — hoping — that Gambit is, like Deadpool was, the start of a new franchise within the X-Men universe, we want to make sure to get it right.”
Originally, Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was set to direct Gambit, but was later replaced with Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow). However, due to the film’s production and release date being pushed back, both Tatum and Liman have been preoccupied with other projects. Right now, Fox is still looking at possible future release dates, with both March 2 and June 29, 2018 the most likely ones so far.
On a more positive note, Deadpool 2 is confirmed to start shooting in the beginning of 2017 and Hugh Jackman’s last Wolverine film is firmly set for a March 3, 2017 release date. Here’s hoping Gambit can catch up in the near future.
