After the Federal and New South Wales Governments proposed financial incentives to ensure that the production for Furiosa, George Miller’s highly anticipated prequel to the 2014 action spectacle Mad Max: Fury Road, would take place in Australia, the film is now expected to be the biggest ever made in the country. Shooting, which will take place in Western Sidney and regional NSW, is expected to begin in June.
“The support of the Federal and New South Wales Governments were pivotal,” said Miller in a statement. “They made it possible for the film to be greenlit, shot in Australia and for the production to be based in our home state.”
The film will star Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role alongside Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul Mateen II. Warner Bros. has said Furiosa will release in theaters June 23, 2023.
“This is great news for NSW – Furiosa is expected to support more than 850 local jobs and bring in around A$350 million ($285 million) into the NSW economy,” State premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
Hemsworth also posted on Instagram applauding the film’s economic contribution and celebrating his involvement in the film.
Although the original character of Furiosa was played by Charlize Theron, the prequel film has recast the role to Taylor-Joy. It’s also unclear, but seems unlikely that audiences will see Tom Hardy’s Mad Max in the spinoff film.
