The upcoming 74th Cannes Film Festival is set to take place July 7, and we’ve just learned which film is going to kick things off: Leos Carax’s romantic musical film Annette, which stars Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. The film will release later this summer in theaters and on Amazon Prime Video.
Annette is set in contemporary Los Angeles and follows a stand-up comedian named Henry, played by Driver, who falls in love with Ann, a world-renowned opera singer played by Cotillard. When the two have their first child together, Annette, and her exceptional destiny turns the couple’s lives upside down.
“Every Leos Carax film is an event,” said Cannes Film Festival president Pierre Lescure. “And this one delivers on its promises! Annette is the gift that lovers of cinema, music and culture were hoping for, one that we have been yearning for during the past year.”
The film’s script, score and original songs were written and composed by Ron and Russell Mael of the rock band Sparks, which formed in 1967. Simon Helberg is also set to star in the film.
Although the festival usually takes place around mid-May, the pandemic has pushed the event back July 6-17. Spike Lee will serve as president of the Jury that awards the major prizes of the festival.
