As reported exclusively by Variety today, the woman behind the wildly popular fairytale that told everyone to ‘Let It Go’ last winter, is now jumping headfirst into a new Disney project. Jennifer Lee, who wrote and co-directed Frozen with Chris Buck, will write the feature adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, the classic 1962 novel by Madeleine L’Engle.
In the tradition of Frozen, Lee will be sticking with the theme of female empowerment with her next endeavor. Her version of the time traveling kids on a quest to save their missing father will be female-centric, and promises epic and inventive science fiction landscapes. It sounds as if Lee’s take will be a more modern re-imagining of the story, compared to the previous version released by Disney in 2003 as a TV movie.
Lee is becoming a notable figure within the Disney family, having also co-written another recent Disney hit, Wreck-It Ralph. Although no other technical details are yet available for A Wrinkle in Time, it’s reasonable to assume the film could be animated, as Lee is part of Disney’s current in-house animation team. Producing the film will be Jim Whitaker, who has made a name for himself with films like Curious George, Changeling, and Disney’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green.
Her work on Frozen earned Lee an Oscar, and brought both adults and children to theaters in huge numbers. A Wrinkle in Time has a chance to achieve similar results, with older audiences not only reacquainting themselves with a novel of their youth, but introducing their children to it as well. Lee is one of many women who are pioneering a rapid movement towards more female roles in Hollywood, both behind the camera and in studio executive chairs as well.
