‘Frozen 2’ Passes the Billion Dollar Mark at the Box Office

Considering the massive success that was Disney’s Frozen, many expected its sequel to also make major bank at the box office. Fortunately for Disney the sequel has been matching the success of the first film, as Frozen 2 has officially made a billion dollars worldwide since this past Saturday. Not only is this a huge success for the animated film, but another huge success for Disney as it is the sixth film from the studio to cross the billion dollar mark at the box office.

Frozen has overall made about $366 million in the U.S. domestic box office while making about $667 million overseas, making it about $1 billion worldwide. It has now joined other Disney hits including Captain Marvel, Endgame, Toy Story 4Aladdin and The Lion King in terms of it being a billion dollar hit for Disney in 2019. The only non-Disney films to cross the billion dollar mark this year are Joker and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which also happened to be a joint effort between Sony and Disney. Not only that but Frozen 2 at the moment is the 8th highest grossing animated movie of all time, only behind Despicable Me 3Toy Story 3&4, Minions, Incredibles 2, the first Frozen and The Lion King remake.

Even though the year is almost done, Frozen 2 is still expected to do very well this holiday season especially considering its recent Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature. Disney still has one last major film to come out this year with Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker on target to be a huge money maker for the company. Despite already reaching one of its expected milestone in terms of box office success, Frozen 2 and Disney are not done yet in terms of being massive money makers in 2019.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
