Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Nomadland star Frances McDormand is set to star in Sarah Polley‘s upcoming adaptation of Miriam Toews’ bestselling novel, Women Talking. MGM’s recently relaunched Orion Pictures and Brad Pitt’s Plan B announced the project on Thursday.
Polley is directing from her own script and McDormand is producing under her Hear/Say label. The Oscar winning actress brought the project to Plan B after acquiring the rights.
The story of Women Talking follows a group of women at an isolated Mennonite religious colony in Bolivia as the struggle to reconcile their faith amidst a series of sexual assaults committed by the colony’s men. The book ended up on many prominent publications best-of-2018 lists.
McDormand also stars in Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland, which seems to already be favorite this awards season. It’s the first film to win the top prize at both the Venice and Toronto film festival, and it won best film, director and cinematography at the Boston Society of Film Critics’ Awards. It’s also nominated for best feature and best actress at the 2021 Gotham Awards.
Polley previously wrote and directed the 2006 drama Away from Her, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. She also directed the 2011 romantic drama Take This Waltz and the 2012 documentary Stories We Tell.
