Florence Pugh has a new project in the works with the adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s psychological thriller novel The Wonder. Sebastián Lelio will be directing the thriller; his previous works include Gloria and the English-language remake Gloria Bell that stars Julianne Moore about a free-spirited woman.
The writer behind TV shows such as Normal People and Succession, Alice Birch, will be writing the script set in the late 1850s. The Wonder follows an English nurse who travels to a small village in Ireland to see what some regard as a medical mystery and others as a miracle: a young girl who has gone months without food. When visitors rush to the cabin to see the 11-year-old and witness the strange and bizarre occurrence, a journalist is dispatched to cover the story.
If the name Emma Donoghue sounds familiar, it should because Donoghue is the author behind Room, a widely acclaimed novel and nominated for several Oscars. The film starred Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay that depicted the heartbreaking story of a young mother held in captivity with her son. Larson won an Oscar for her performance.
Pugh had recently finished filming Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling. Pugh is also starring in the Marvel blockbuster Black Widow that will be released in theaters and Disney+ in July
