Five Years After Six Seasons, ‘Community’ Movie A Distinct Possibility

‘Community’ was an ensemble comedy television series created by Dan Harmon that originally aired on NBC from 2009- 2015. It was cancelled after just five seasons before eventually receiving a sixth season through the short-lived Yahoo! Screen streaming service. Set at a community college, the show was known for its offbeat comedy, impressive genre parodies and altar cast that included Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, and Chevy Chase.

While officially canceled in 2015, rumors of a movie continuation has been going on for years, a reference to one meta-joke of how the Greendale students’ antics would have lasted “six seasons and a movie.” A Community movie would be a surefire success, but faces difficulty getting made because of the former cast’s busy schedules. As of now, the movie is more dream than reality, but some cast members see it being just the opposite.

Joe McHale says that he and fellow Community alumni Alison Brie are more hopeful than ever, stating that he’s hearing more rumblings than ever heard. “There’s way more rumblings than there used to be,” Hale told Entertainment Tonight, “Alison [Brie] tweeted that she got a phone call from Sony. They still haven’t called me; maybe Matthew Lillard will take over. But I would say there’s a better chance than there’s ever been.”

Whether it happens or not is still up in the air, especially with the industry at a standstill due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, a comedy movie with Community‘s brand of humor would be a welcome sign for fans and movie lovers everywhere, especially in uncertain times such as these. Until then, the show is now available to watch on Netflix.
