Hotlist indie actor Paul Dano‘s directorial debut, Wildlife, has already been picking up a lot of buzz after its premiere earlier this year at Sundance and in the past couple weeks at Cannes. The film is now gaining momentum with its first teaser trailer officially released.

The film was written by Dano (There Will Be Blood) and real-life girlfriend/fellow actress Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick) and is an adaptation of the 1990 Richard Ford same-titled novel. The story follows a married couple’s gradual separation after their move to Montana when the wife falls in love with another man and their young teenage son is there to witness all the strife.

Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal star as the struggling husband and wife and newcomer Ed Oxenbould plays their son.

Just from the trailer, Dano’s penchant for beautiful cinematic visuals already comes through, as well as Mulligan’s captivating performance that is garnering her early Oscar buzz outside of the festival circuit.

Wildlife hits theaters on October 19, courtesy of IFC Films. Watch the teaser below.
