Big Eyes, the story of how artist Margaret Keane took credit for her paintings of big-eyed subjects after letting her husband take all the glory for years, has its first trailer. Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz star as Margaret and Walter, Tim Burton directs the script from Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Big Eyes will reach theaters on December 25.
The trailer hits the highlights of Margaret Keane’s career. Her paintings catch the attention of the public but her husband takes credit for the work claiming that “people don’t buy lady art.” Eventually Margaret divorces Walter and goes to court to prove that she is the real artist. Tim Burton has a collection of Keane’s work that includes a painting he commissioned of his, at that time, girlfriend. Overall the trailer seems very… normal considering the choice in director. Burton’s films like Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride, tend have a very dull, black-and-white settings to contrast a bright and colorful (often weird) alternate setting. Every scene in Big Eyes looks much more realistic. Given the timing of the release, Burton could be toning down his eccentricities to finally get himself a Best Director Oscar – so far he has had two films nominated for Best Animated Feature.
