First Teaser for Darren Aronofsky’s ‘mother!’ Confuses and Thrills

These are the separate lines of dialogue that start the first teaser for Darren Aronofsky‘s mother! Based on the dialogue above and the limited footage that follows, it is clear that this film will be about strangers, misunderstanding, and the possible destruction of the domestic space. mother! will tell the story of couple played by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem whose quiet world is shaken up when they take in two unexpected visitors, played by Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer. As the teaser progresses, we learn that these people have come to visit Bardem’s character, suggesting that there will be a mystery to unfold regarding his past, and that Lawrence’s character will be in the dark at the outset.

Aronofsky, known for such dynamically dark fare as Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream, revels in suspense building through fractured narratives. Based on this teaser and the film’s official tagline “some fears are beyond conception,” it would be safe to say that the filmmaker is continuing with this enigmatic storytelling tool.
