Author Donna Tartt’s epic masterpiece of a novel The Goldfinch is getting the inevitable film treatment, thankfully from an all-star team. The highly anticipated first trailer was finally released today by Warner Brothers, and much of the emotion from the novel is captured in this first look along with glimpses of the promising cast.
The story follows the tragic life of Theo, played by both Oakes Fegley as young Theo and Baby Driver‘s Ansel Elgort as the older. After his mother is killed in a shocking bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Theo steals his mother’s favorite painting and is sent on a tumultuous path for the rest of his life, always shadowed by pain and the guilt of his crime.
He is taken in by numerous people along the way who do their best to help get him back on the right track, such as wealthy mother Ms. Barbour (Nicole Kidman) and wise antiques expert Hobie (Jeffrey Wright). Theo forms lasting friendships along the way, notably with the rebellious Boris, played by Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard and Dunkirk‘s Aneurin Barnard. More notable cast members include Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson, and Ashleigh Cummings.
The Goldfinch is set to release in late 2019 and may be a contender for next year’s award season. Director John Crowley is no stranger to the annual festivities after directing 2015’s Brooklyn. Cinematographer Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) is also one of the most renowned cinematographers of our time, and this short trailer already showcases how his talent applies itself well to capturing Theo’s heart-wrenching journey.
